Today we’ll be finishing up the work on our new bedroom, and then it’ll be my turn to finish it up. At first, it felt like moving our bedroom into this room was a huge commitment, like I had to settle for a shoddy situation. But I can honestly say that as of today, I’m incredibly excited for this room to be our bedroom. Now that the closet walls have been torn down and the room has flooring again (or a subfloor, to be more precise), this room feels HUGE compared to the room we’ve been in for the past four years. So let me show you the progress.
This is what the entrance to the room looked like before, with the long wall on the left blocking most of the view of the room from the door.
I should have taken this photo from the same angle, but you can see from the stripes that the wall is now about half its original length. If you locate the darker pink stripe in the middle of the wall in the photo above, you can see below that that stripe is where the wall ends now.

And looking in the other direction towards the bedroom door, this is what it looked like before with the closet area still intact.
And this is what it looks like now. For now, we need to keep the attic entrance in this room. Once I start working on the other room, I’ll move it there and close this one off. I don’t want the attic entrance in our bedroom. The two lights in that old closet area are also being removed and the holes will be covered up.

And here it is now. Removing those walls added almost 40 square feet of space to the main bedroom area. That may not seem like much, but when you’re trying to move a 6’2″ 210 lb man around in a wheelchair or Hoyer lift, that extra space makes a huge difference!
Of course, the difference will be more noticeable when that area is not separated by such a marked color difference. Being painted black, that visual separation does not give the impression of being part of the main area of the room.
The room really does feel bigger than I expected. Obviously, I knew it would feel bigger once the closet walls were taken down, but I didn’t expect it to make such a big difference.
But now it seems like a decent size for a master bedroom. Don’t get me wrong. I would have loved it to be even bigger. But now I’m very pleased, and even incredibly excited, with this bedroom. I can’t wait to get in and start working on it!
I’m planning on moving the breaker box. For now, my plan is to simply turn it around so that instead of facing the bedroom, it faces the room behind it (i.e. our current bedroom).
I do need to think about it a little more though. I actually need to solidify my plan for that room and then decide how the breaker box can work into the plan. Until I have a plan nailed down, the breaker box needs to stay exactly where it is and I’ll need to work around it. That’s okay though. I’m still a couple weeks away from being ready to start on this room. I’m still working on my studio! And I won’t allow myself to start working on this room until the studio is finished. That gives me motivation to stay focused!
