Star Wars Halloween Costumes // Lovely Indeed Family Costumes

Star Wars Halloween costumes are so fun to create for a group! Our family had a great time putting these together – see below how to recreate our Star Wars family Leia, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and baby R2D2 costumes for Halloween.

Remember when we made Star Wars costumes for Halloween? There’s not much I love more than a family or group Halloween costume, and I’m so excited that the kids like the idea again this year.

We’re keeping this year’s costume a secret until October 31, but today I’m sharing how we put together our Star Wars family Halloween costume from last year!

We found almost everything we needed in our closets, with the exception of a few key pieces (hello, lightsaber!) that we bought.

Create profitable Halloween costumes

A note on how we make Halloween costumes for our family! I like to make sure everything is as cost-effective as possible, so whenever I can I use what we have.

Otherwise, I try to buy pieces that we can then use in daily life, like the pants we bought for Henry’s Luke Skywalker costume.

I try to limit purchases of parts we will never use again. So hopefully you’ll be able to search your closet (or at least a thrift store!) for most of these things.

How to Make Family Star Wars Costumes for Halloween

Luke Skywalker costume for children

It was Henry’s idea to be Star Wars, and a year later he is still obsessed. We have the Little Golden Books of Star Wars and we read them all. he. time.

So he decided who would be who and obviously chose Luke for him. This one is very simple.

A white t-shirt, an oversized beige cardigan for the jedi robe (the cardigan was an old one of mine), a woven belt (also mine), some tight khaki pants.

Ace bandages wrapped around the lower half of the legs and some tan shoes (we used some slip-on Toms that Henry already had. Add a lightsaber and GO!

A note on the lightsaber: we found one for $5 at Walmart, but I wasn’t able to relocate it to share here. The closest thing I could find is linked below!

At one point we also made a small holster to hold an extra blaster that clipped to his belt, but it didn’t work very well, so at some point during the day we just took it off.

R2-D2 costume for baby

I was MOST excited about this one, because it involved a bit of DIY! It was basically just cutting out felt and gluing it to the hat and dress, but still. It was fun to put it together.

I don’t have a pattern for the pieces we glued to Maggie’s R2-D2 costume, but just blow up the photos and you can recreate it.

For Mags, we wore a little white dress, gray leggings, silver loafers, and a gray hat, with felt applied in blue, gray, red, and black.

I didn’t measure or trace anything for the shapes we glued; everything was seen. I used E6000 to glue all the pieces together. See below for links to purchase.

Princess Leia Costume

We decided to use the Empire Strikes Back look for all the characters because they were the easiest to replicate.

So for my Leia, I wore a white button-down shirt, a white vest, white jeans, and brown boots.

I put milkmaid braids in my hair and we got little fake blasters at the dollar store, which I painted rust.

If you carry a blaster, make sure it doesn’t look like a real weapon. (I get a little nervous about that.)

We looked for ones that looked as futuristic as possible, so they definitely looked like toys. See below for links to purchase.

Easy Han Solo costume

Admittedly, Ryan’s Han Solo costume is probably the most understated of the bunch.

Initially we were going to make him the little hip holster that Han wears and we finally ran out of time. So this one is pretty basic!

Tan henley shirt, black vest, dark pants or jeans, and a blaster like the one above. Made. See below for links to purchase.

We had a LOT of fun. I will never forget the family costume.

There are families in our neighborhood with kids in high school who are still doing it and every time I see them I think GOALS!
