Space planning tips and floor plans submitted by readers

My mom and I had a lot of fun yesterday (until 4:00 pm) sitting at lunchtime looking at and discussing the plans some of you sent in. I’m pretty sure we talked about all the possibilities out there and came up with some really creative ideas.

I was right when I said in yesterday’s post that I needed help getting out of my tunnel vision. And this whole exercise of looking at actual plans submitted by other people and seeing how others imagine the possibilities for our home really helped me start thinking outside the box.

I haven’t gotten to the point where I can say, “This is the plan!” I haven’t even shown Matt any of the plans that were presented to me, and I’m still thinking through various possibilities. I want to take my time rather than rush into a decision. And I have a lot of ideas to mull over now.

What I found interesting is that the ideas seemed to fall into two broad categories. The first category of plans called for one large rectangular addition to the back of the house. The second category of plans called for two separate additions, one on each side of the back of the house, with a deck or patio between those two additions. So let me show you all the ideas so far. And if you wanted to submit an idea but haven’t had the time yet, send it to me! Nothing is set in stone right now.

First, let me remind you what our floor plan looks like right now, with the sunroom and small bathroom removed, since they will be demolished anyway.

This plan was submitted by Becca and shows a single large addition at the back of the house. Behind the master bathroom is a gym. Next to it is a laundry room. And next to it (and behind the kitchen and music room) is a large living room. The current guest bedroom would be converted into a large master closet and the current living room would be converted into the dining room.

This plan is Becky’s and also has a large additional rectangle in the back. The concept is very similar, as the new rear addition houses a workout area and master dressing room behind the current master bathroom, a laundry room next door, and a dining room behind the current kitchen and music room.

The next one is also from Becky, and instead of one large room behind the current music room and kitchen, this plan allows for an extension of the current kitchen and a rear entry.

The next floor plan is Jennifer’s. It also has a large rectangular addition in the back to include a closet and laundry room, an exercise room, and a family room. The current family room becomes a dining room, and the kitchen expands into the current breakfast/living room.

This next floor plan is from Charity and also has a single addition in the back, although it is two different sized rectangles instead of one large rectangle. Behind our bathroom would be a home gym. The addition behind the current music room and kitchen would be a family room and dining room. The current living room becomes a TV room. The kitchen expands into the current breakfast room/den. And the current guest bedroom becomes a closet. This floor plan also has two small areas marked area #1 and area #2. Charity suggests that these could be used for storage and laundry.

Next up is the first of two addition floor plans. This one from Nick has an exercise room added to the back of our bathroom, a family room added to the back of the music room, and a pantry behind the kitchen. The patio/deck sits between the exercise room and family room with a curved design in the back. The current breakfast room and pantry become a dining room. The guest bedroom becomes a large closet. The hall bathroom becomes the laundry room. And the half bath in my den becomes the full guest bathroom.

This is also Nick’s, with some minor changes. In this shot, the gym and the locker are reversed.

And lastly, this is Teri’s. This one also has two separate additions with a patio in between. The addition behind the bathrooms includes an exercise room, a large closet, and a laundry room. And on the other side is the kitchen addition she had planned.

I love some aspects of all of these projects! Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to put these plans together and send them to me. I plan on sitting down with Matt this weekend and going over them all in great detail. Thanks again everyone! This was such a fun experiment. If you still want to submit a plan, please do! And if you submitted a plan and don’t see it above, that means I didn’t receive it, so please submit it again. As I receive new plans, I’ll add them to this post.

Update: More ideas!

This floor plan is Monica’s. I haven’t had much time to study it in depth yet, but it looks very interesting! It’s sort of a hybrid between an extension and two separate extensions with a gallery connecting the two new sections.

Monica also sent this revised plan showing the wall between the dining room and family room removed to open those rooms up to each other.

The next floor plan is by Arlene. The concept is very similar to a couple of others, with a large rectangular addition at the back of the house that includes a closet, gym, laundry room, and family room. This plan includes a bank of corner windows and shows the traffic patterns from room to room.

This floor plan is by Joleen and includes a rectangular addition at the back of the house with a combined closet and laundry area, an exercise room, and a living room. The current breakfast/living room would become the kitchen. The current kitchen would become the dining room. And the current living room would be expanded to give us a larger family room.

The following floor plan is from Maureen. This plan has a home gym, guest bedroom, and living room in a rectangular addition at the back of the house. The current hall bathroom would be converted to a Jack and Jill bathroom accessible from the hallway and guest bedroom. The current guest bedroom could be converted to the combined closet and laundry room. The kitchen would be expanded to become the current breakfast/living room. And the front living room would be converted to the dining room.

This floor plan is Christina’s. This floor plan takes our front door out of the living room and creates an entryway where the current front windows of the breakfast nook are. The current guest bedroom becomes our home gym. An addition allows for a new large closet and guest bedroom. The current hall bathroom is expanded to allow for a small hallway with doors to the guest bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen is expanded to be square with the back wall of the current pantry. And the back of the current breakfast nook/living room/pantry area is converted to a dining room.

The next floor plan is by M. This floor plan squares the front of the current dining room with the front of the living room and moves the front door to the right so it’s not directly in the living room. The current kitchen becomes the dining room. The current dining room becomes the kitchen. And then an addition at the back of the house includes a closet, a laundry room, and an exercise room. The door to the master bedroom is raised to create a nook for storing items like the Hoyer lift.

The following floor plan is from MJ. This floor plan includes an addition to the back of the house that includes an exercise room with a laundry area, a guest bedroom, and a kitchen. The current hall bathroom is extended further into the hallway to make room to access the guest bedroom. The current guest bedroom is converted into a closet and storage space, with some changes to the position of the walls. And the current kitchen is converted into the dining room.

The following floor plan is from Diana, who is an interior designer and specializes in space planning. This floor plan also squares the front of the current breakfast room/living room to the front of the living room, creates a proper foyer at the entry door, and moves the living room to occupy what is currently the living room and what would be the squared-off front of the current breakfast room. The current breakfast room/living room and pantry would become the kitchen. The current kitchen would become the dining room. The hall bathroom extends further into the hallway, creating a small hall entry on the other side. And an addition at the back of the house would include a multi-purpose exercise room that could be converted to a guest bedroom with the use of a murphy bed.

The next floor plan is from Lora. This plan has a large rectangular addition at the back of the house for a large master bedroom that includes a sitting area. The home gym would remain where it has been for the past year and a half. The current guest bedroom would open to the entryway to be used as a sitting area. The current living room would be converted into a dining area. The current hall bathroom would be converted into a combined closet and laundry area. And the half bathroom in the current study would be converted into a full bathroom. This plan eliminates all of the wasted space in the current hallway.
