Oral Care Routine (That Reversed My Cavities)

Many years ago, I shared my experience of remineralizing my teeth. Since then, I have received hundreds of questions about my oral care routine. Although I am not actively working on curing any cavities now, I still follow this routine to keep my teeth healthy.

Good oral hygiene helps prevent cavities and other problems like bad breath, gingivitis, and even oral cancer. It’s essential to take care of our mouth!

My daily oral hygiene routine

This is the daily oral care routine I follow to help keep my mouth healthy. It helped me remineralize my teeth years ago. Now, I use it to help prevent new cavities. Taking care of your teeth is an important part of tooth remineralization and preventing cavities.

Tomorrow

  • Oil Extraction – As soon as I wake up, I do a mouthwash with coconut oil and a few drops of Wellnesse Balanced Mouth Blend. I swish for 15-20 minutes, spit into the trash can, and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Do not swallow this oil to keep oral bacteria out of your body. This has really helped me remove plaque and tartar buildup.
  • Mouthwash – If I don’t have time to do an oil pull, I mix a few drops of Mouth Blend with some water and use it as a mouthwash. It’s a great alternative to conventional mouthwash.
  • Brush – Afterwards, I brush my teeth with a homemade remineralizing toothpaste or tooth powder. I also use my Wellnesse bamboo toothbrush with firm bristles. Dentists often recommend daily brushing with a soft-bristled brush, but I find that firmer bristles clean the surfaces of your teeth better. Don’t have time to make your own toothpaste at home?   • Supplements – I take vitamin K2-7, which helps direct calcium to bones and teeth. And I also take a magnesium supplement, which is used for over 600 functions in the body. It’s vital for health!
  • Probiotics – In the morning, I take a probiotic to maintain gut and overall health. I also take a Wellnesse Oral Microbiome Probiotic. It helps balance the good and bad bacteria in the mouth.

Day time

  • Hydrate – Our mouth needs an alkaline pH to stay healthy. Drinking water helps produce more saliva and keeps the pH more alkaline. A 2013 study found that those with a higher pH had more severe gingivitis than those with a more alkaline pH. I drink half my body weight in filtered water.
  • Vitamin D – This is one of the most important vitamins for dental health. And getting it from the sun is the best way to increase vitamin D. In addition to going outside at dawn and dusk for 10 or 15 minutes, I also try to get 20 or 30 minutes of sun exposure at midday.

Evening

  • Loose silk – I use Wellnesse Mint Silk Floss to make sure I remove all food debris and plaque. This helps prevent periodontal problems like gingivitis.
  • Brush – After flossing, I brush my teeth again. If I want to whiten my teeth, I brush my teeth several times a week with activated charcoal, which works wonders! You can also use Wellnesse charcoal toothpaste. I usually use the Bass brushing technique.
  • Tongue scraping – This is a popular Ayurvedic practice. You literally scrape your tongue to remove bacteria! I do this once a day to remove any buildup on my tongue and maintain a healthy mouth. Our Wellnesse tongue scraper is made from long-lasting, antimicrobial copper.

Diet for oral health

I strive to eat a healthy combination of protein, fat, and vegetables every day. Believe it or not, diet is a key component to remineralizing teeth.

It’s important to get enough fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and minerals, so I focus on healthy fats and vegetables. Since collagen is the building block of our bodies, it’s important to get enough protein. I aim to consume one ounce of protein for every pound of body weight (or ideal weight). I like to use protein and collagen powders.

It’s also important to limit phytic acid, which is found in grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes. If you eat these foods, soak and dehydrate them to reduce the amount of phytic acid.

Diet example

Here’s what I made a goal to eat each day to get the amount of vitamins, minerals, fats, and protein I needed to maintain good oral health. Since I’ve had genetic testing, I’ve discovered that I have the FTO genes and I feel better with less saturated fat (although I still think it’s healthy!). The amount needed depends on the person, but healthy fats and animal proteins are still important:

  • 3 or 4 eggs with vegetables and meat or a collagen-based protein shake. Sometimes I also have a healthy coffee with a boost of good fats for breakfast.
  • Healthy proteins like grass-fed beef, pasture-raised chicken, or wild salmon at every meal.
  • 2 cups total homemade bone broth for lunch and dinner (Don’t have time to make bone broth at home? This is my favorite store-bought, organic, grass-fed broth.)
  • 4-6 cups of vegetables, usually in soups or with meats. I make sure to include plenty of brightly colored, leafy greens.
  • 2-4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons or more of grass-fed butter
  • Coconut-based snacks such as coconut cream.
  • Other healthy fats such as avocado, tallow for cooking and olive oil in salads.

The difference between natural oral care products

Conventional oral hygiene products are packed with harmful chemicals like fluoride, BPA, sodium lauryl sulfate, and phthalates. Plus, I only use natural products for my teeth and gums. This made a huge difference for me personally. After switching to natural oral hygiene products, I realized that something in the conventional products was causing the gum irritation I had since I had braces as a teenager.
