My last chance to use an all-time favorite

Yesterday I met with the person who is (hopefully) going to be removing all of the damaged flooring and subflooring in our current home gym and replacing the subfloor, as well as removing the rest of the walls around the original closet area. I will be installing and finishing the hardwood flooring myself, and then I want to be ready to finish the rest of the room without delay so we can move in and get settled in as soon as possible. I just want to get out of our current bedroom with a vengeance, and I’m ready to get into our permanent bedroom.

With that goal in mind, I’ve been trying to get all my plans for our “new” bedroom in motion so that I don’t have to struggle with decisions once the floor is finished. Right now, the room looks like this…

I painstakingly painted all those stripes on the walls using 15 different paint colors. It wasn’t an easy project at all, and I love how they turned out…For a home gymBut I don’t want those walls to stay like this when this room becomes our bedroom.

I’ve been brainstorming and thinking about how I want this room to look and feel when it’s finished. Here’s what I know for sure.

The ground…

The flooring in this room will match the rest of the house. I will not be painting the floor in the new room anymore. Therefore, the same red oak hardwood flooring, stained exactly the same color, will be used throughout the room.

The windows…

Another thing I know for sure is that I will keep the curtains and blinds. While I generally prefer lined curtains, I like these curtains too much to get rid of them. These are the ones I purchased (affiliate link) and they are great quality. I think they will work perfectly for what I envision.

But I won’t be sticking with the black curtain rods. I’ll either paint them gold or swap them out for the ones I used in my studio, which is by far my favorite curtain rod I’ve purchased to date. This is the one I have in my studio, with these curtain rings, and even though it says it’s not adjustable, I cut mine to the exact size I needed using my miter saw.

The ceiling fan..

And the ceiling fan is staying. As much as I would love to have a nice bedroom with a lovely light in the middle of the room, this is Texas. I couldn’t sleep without a ceiling fan.

The bed…

I’ll also be making a new headboard and maybe even a full upholstered bed. I love the headboard we have now…

But we’ve had that headboard for about ten years. It was one of the first projects I did for our house after we moved in and I’m ready for something new and updated.

I thought I’d use the striped velvet I originally ordered as a sample for my study desk chair. I actually made a mock-up of that a few weeks ago. Here’s how it turned out…

The other day I was about to order enough to upholster a bed, but I didn’t. I think I’d rather have the bed be one color and the stripe used as an accent. So I’ll order enough for a couple of large Euro pillow shams or something.

The walls…

But the main question is what to do with the walls, because like I said, those striped walls have to go. I’ve looked at so many different options and images for inspiration, and I always come back to one thing: grasscloth. I feel like I’ve come full circle. My love for grasscloth started about 15 years ago. I actually used grasscloth in our bedroom at the condo. Teal, white grasscloth, woven curtains. Some things never go out of style or out of style in my mind. This was in 2010.

Unfortunately, I never finished the bedroom. We decided to sell it, I removed the jute fabric and completely changed the room.

And then in this house, I used a grasscloth as an accent on the entry wall.

When that got ruined and I had to remove it, I used what I had left in the drawers of the console table I built for the entryway.

I have considered using grasscloth for various rooms and projects on many other occasions, and yet today I find myself in a grasscloth-less house. So I’m thinking now might be a good time to rectify that oversight. I can envision some dark teal grasscloth, white wainscoting, white gauze curtains (affiliate link), rustic walnut woven blinds (affiliate link), a beautiful upholstered headboard (or an entire upholstered bed) in a yet-to-be-determined color and fabric, and some decorative pillows in striped velvet.

This may be my last chance to use burlap fabric. I have loved it for 15 years and it is always at the top of my list (at least in my top 10, if not my top 5) of favorite items when it comes to decor. It would be a shame to finish every room in this house and not end up with burlap fabric somewhere. So I am thinking that this bedroom (our long-term bedroom that we will probably be in for the rest of our time in this house) is the perfect place for it. And I feel like it is now or never.
