Mary Poppins Returns is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. It’s the perfect sequel, in my opinion, with so many references to the original, perfect music, an incredible cast and gorgeous costumes.
One year for Oogie Boogie Bash, I knew our Disney inspired costumes had to be Mary Poppins and Jack in their painted outfits from the Royal Doulton Music Hall scene and we made it happen. Here’s how to make your own Mary Poppins Returns costumes!

How to make a Mary Poppins Returns costume
There are so many amazing costumes in Mary Poppins Returns to choose from, but Mary Poppins’ pink striped outfit is my favorite from this movie! Because the entire costume is in a painterly style, it leaves plenty of room for creation without the need for perfection. This is what you will need:
Supplies needed
Step by step tutorial

- For the skirt: Layer by layer, you will paint pink stripes on each tier of the Victorian skirt. Be sure to place a tray or wax paper between each layer as you paint so the paint doesn’t leak, and let each layer dry before moving on to the next. I just did my stripes freehand as they are supposed to have a “painterly” look.

- Apply a pink paint a little deeper than the color of your shirt to the top and bottom of the sleeves and the bottom of the bodice.
- My shirt didn’t have buttons on the front, so I drew them with paint and a black fabric marker.

- For the neck: Trace the edge of your Peter Pan collar onto white craft foam. Draw a ruffled shape, about 1.5″ long along the edges, as shown.
- Draw an arch shape on another piece of craft foam.
- Paint these pieces pink and draw the lines for the bow and ruffles with a black fabric marker.
- Leaving a 1/2″ overhang at the top of the foam (above where you drew the edge of the collar so you can attach it), cut out the collar and bow.
- Paint a pink stripe along the neckline of your Peter Pan collar and outline it with a black fabric marker. Next, make black stitching marks along the bottom edge.
- Hot glue the foam ruffle and bow to the neck.

- For the hat: Paint the brim of your hat pink.
- Glue a pink ribbon around the base of the hat.
- Draw two sets of wing shapes on white craft foam. Also draw two bird heads. Paint one pair of wings and head pink and the other blue. Add details with craft markers.
- Next, you will create a “ball” that will act as a body with simply crumpled wax paper. Wrap the wings around the ball you created and hot glue it on. Place the head too.
- Hot glue the two birds to the side of your hat and glue flowers to their beaks if you wish!
- Put together your costume. The skirt, if you bought the one I stitched together and wore, you have to wear it inside out. I pinned my hat to my head with bobby pins!

How to make Jack’s costume
The color of Jack’s suit in this incredible scene is very striking and the perfect complement to the more subtle tones of Mary Poppins. Here’s how to create your costume.
Supplies needed
Step by step tutorial

- Following the directions on the dye bottle, dye your top coat/vest.
- For the top layer: Paint a checkered pattern on the vest. Start lightly drawing the pattern with white paint. Then paint the green checkered pattern. Also add some red details.
- Paint the buttons green and outline them with a black fabric marker.
- Add white paint to the sleeves and edges of the lapel to make it look painted.
- Paint a thin black line and a thin red line along the edge of the lapel, coat, and sleeves.

- For the pants: Paint turquoise stripes on your pants. They don’t have to be perfect!
- Then paint red stripes over the top, allowing some white to show through between the two color stripes.
- Use a black marker to add a line that varies in thickness along the edge of each stripe.
- For the tie: Paint the center of the tie and the knot with white paint to add a faux “highlight.”
- Outline the tie with a black fabric marker.

- For the hat: Paint the hat turquoise. Paint the border red.
- Assemble the costume! Add a white shirt under the coat and turquoise shoes.
