DIY Inside Out 2 Costumes

Inside Out 2 quickly became the biggest animated movie of all time and won so many Disney-loving hearts, including our families! We especially loved the addition of new characters. So naturally, we had to make some Inside Out 2 costumes for Halloween this year. Creating an Anxiety costume, an Envy costume, and an Ennui costume were pretty simple, mostly just clothes you could wear long after trick-or-treating.

Of course, there are also some DIY elements to make these Inside Out costumes you love. These costumes make a great trio costume or are perfect for a family of four if you add Shame. Add the original Inside Out characters and you’ve got a group or teacher costume.

Here are the simple instructions on how to make each one!

DIY Anxiety Costume

Anxiety was the star of Inside Out 2 and its air makes it the most fun and eye-catching wardrobe accessory. You can do it with pipe cleaners! Here is the step by step to make a DIY Anxiety costume from Inside Out 2.

Step by step tutorial

1. Spread your sweater on a table or surface and place cardboard (or wax paper or another separator so paint doesn’t seep through) between the front and back.
2. Tape a large orange stripe across the chest, one around the base of the turtleneck, and three on each sleeve. Paint. Fabric paint absorbs quickly into fabric, so you may need two coats depending on the material of your sweater.
3. Leave the cardboard inside the sweater while it dries BUT, before letting it dry completely, gently and briefly lift the painted part of the cardboard so it doesn’t stick.
4. Let it dry completely and then turn the sweater inside out and do the same on the back.

5. To create the headpiece, cut a 4″ piece from the top of the cardboard mailing tube. This will be the base of your hat.
6. Start hot gluing orange pipe cleaners around it until it is completely covered.
7. Add additional pipe cleaners or feathers as desired.
8. Gently run your fingers along each pipe cleaner to “curve” it, as desired.

9. Now you will need to determine how you want to place the helmet on your head. I chose to put my hair in a bun and use wig clips and bobby pins to hold the hat around my bun. Instead, you can choose to place it on a headband.
   • For the wig clip method: Hot glue a wig clip to the front of the headpiece. Hot glue additional small loops of ribbon along the bottom edge that can be used to secure with bobby pins.
   • For the headband method: Cut a circle of felt the same size as the bottom of the headdress. Place the headband between the helmet, felt, and hot glue. You will probably need additional bobby pins to keep the headband in place.

10. To make the button: Hot glue the wooden ring to the wooden circle.
11. Paint with gold paint and let dry.
12. Cut two small pieces of ribbon and hot glue them in a cross shape in the center.
13. Glue a clip to the back so it can clip to your belt.
14. Put together your costume!
    • Tuck the sweater into your corduroy pants and fold the turtleneck inward instead of outward, so the orange stripe still shows.
    • If necessary, use temporary hem tape to shorten the pants so you can see more boots.
    • Fasten the belt through the loops and fasten the button in the front.
    • Once dressed, cover your clothes with a towel and carefully ask someone to spray your hair with orange hairspray. Position your headdress as you wish.

DIY Envy Costume

Envy is possibly the most adorable costume option in Inside Out 2. It’s the perfect costume for the kid in your family or life. She’s short and sweet and has the funniest hair! And if you’re in a cold climate, Envy can wear boots. Premium! Learn how to make a DIY Envy costume by following the tutorial below.

Step by step tutorial

1. Place the shirt or dress on a table or surface and place cardboard between the front and back.

2. Use your circle stencil and paint (I mixed neon yellow and white to make a light yellow that glows!) to paint dots all over your shirt as desired. Fabric paint absorbs quickly, so you may need to apply a few coats. Let each layer dry in between.
   • Note: If using a Cricut and vinyl to create your polka dots, follow the instructions on the iron-on package and skip to step 4.
3. Leave the cardboard inside the sweater while it dries BUT, before letting it dry completely, gently and briefly lift the painted part of the cardboard so it doesn’t stick.
4. Paint the faux Peter Pan collar magenta (or sew one if you wish).
5. Assemble the Envy costume!
   • Place the Peter Pan collar under the shirt/dress.
   • Pair it with leggings and boots.
   • Cover the whole thing with a towel and carefully spray your hair with teal temporary hairspray. Add magenta clips, one on each side.

DIY Ennui Costume

Ennui’s outfit makes for the most comfortable costume – it’s just a tracksuit! But upgrade your costume by covering your shoes with socks to give it that dull, carefree feeling we know and love from Ennui! Follow the instructions below to learn how to put together an Inside Out 2 Ennui costume.

Supplies

Step by step tutorial

1. If you wish, you can temporarily make the cuffs of your hoodie a brighter blue, like Ennui’s. Cut a strip of fabric the same length as the cuff plus 1″ and double the width of the cuff plus 1″.
2. Hand sew or glue the two ends to form a circle.
3. Wrap the new bracelet around the existing bracelet. Fold the top edge less than 1/2″ to create a clean edge. Slip stitch to existing cuff. Do the same with the inside of the bracelet.
4. If you want your socks to be non-slip, add dots of hot glue or puffy paint to the bottom and let them dry completely.
5. Put together your costume!
   • Spray the wig with blue glitter.
   • Put on your tracksuit.
   • Put on your shoes and slide your socks over your shoes. Tuck the ends of your socks under your sweatshirt.
   • Put on the wig and the purple case on your phone!

Since there are only three of us, we recruited our dog to use Shame. I’ll include ideas here for a puppy and human version of this shame costume, the easiest one ever!
