I love creating kid-friendly spaces, especially during the holidays, and I’ve found the best way to do this is to get the kids involved. It’s around this time of year that my daughter starts asking if we can work on Thanksgiving place cards. He has been in charge for the last three years and takes his role very seriously. Here are four place card options your kids will enjoy creating.
1. Fingerprint card
Supplies:
- brown paint
- red paint
- yellow paint
- orange paint
- bulging eyes
- cardboard
Take a piece of cardstock, cut it in half, and then fold each half in half. Using your child’s index finger, start with the outer layer of feathers (yellow) and make seven fingerprints in an arc. Make all the fingerprints in this color at once and let dry. Using orange paint, make seven fingerprints slightly overlapping the yellow. Let dry. With red paint make five fingerprints and let dry. For the body of the turkey, use brown paint and use the child’s thumb. Let dry and add googly eyes.
2. Origami Pilgrim Ship Location Cards
Supplies:
- Craft paper (or scrapbooking paper)
- toothpicks
Buy scrapbook paper or the more economical method and buy a roll of kraft paper and cut it to the size of 8.5″ x 11″. Using these instructions create origami boats. The instructions are simple and direct, and school-aged children can easily follow them. I found that the best thing was to work alongside my children, working together every step of the way. Once completed, create a small tag (or use tags and fold them in half on the toothpick) using cardstock and a toothpick. Insert the toothpick into the center of the jar.
3. golden feathers
Supplies:
- Metallic gold craft paint.
- Feathers (You can buy a large bag for $1.99 at Michaels)
- Sharpie fine tip marker.
Using a foam brush or other paintbrush, have the children paint the feathers gold. You can paint the entire feather or just part of it. Do two or three thin coats. This will create a hard coating on the pen that will give you a surface to write names on.
4. Place Cards with Ribbon Turkeys
Supplies:
- Ribbon assortment
- cardboard
- Low temperature glue gun
- Circle or Scalloped Paper Punch
Punch two circles out of kraft or scrapbook paper. Cut five 2 1/2″ pieces of ribbon. Fold the tape in half and stick it to one side of the scallop. Glue the remaining tapes. Glue additional scallop on top (hides the ugly ribbon ends!).
Give your kids a chance to shine on Thanksgiving and they will be more than proud of their amazing Thanksgiving place cards!
