You learn a lot about people in times of adversity. Last week, my mom was home on Siesta Key, just south of the city of Sarasota, facing the direct hit of Hurricane Milton. I encouraged her to take a flight ahead of time, but my mom insisted on staying in the area. He packed his bags and went to my sister’s house, five miles inland.
I asked him if he had brought our family photos, as I had suggested. “There was no room left in the car,” he said. “What else did you bring?” “My insurance records, some clothes, my good jewelry… and the meats in the freezer.”
Frozen meat, but not family photos.
She’s fine and luckily so is the beef steak. Family photos also survived. She was lucky.
Here’s a great roast recipe for everyone celebrating the first day of Save-The-Beef-Chuck-First.
We’re starting to rev up our Christmas engines: we have a lot of things to do!
Send Noodz, a noodle program, naturally, launched on the site (and all of our social media) this week. Get the Dan Dan Noodles recipe here.
Let Me Show You, a series about cooking fundamentals, hit YouTube last week. In this episode, content creator and cookbook author Stefan Ng explains everything about knives.
Cocktail A Day continues on Food52 IG, and this Blood Orange French 75 is the perfect shade for Halloween.
And for you bakers, Nea and Sarah Fennel of Broma Bakery made a cherry danish.
We found this Texas-sized double-walled shaker. With 8 drinks per batch, it solves a common party bottleneck.
And advent calendars are officially back in the Store! Choose from artisanal tea, chocolate, coffee and licorice. They start shipping on November 4th.
We took a new photo of our Dansk fire pits and I am in love with this one. The new casseroles are nice and large, ideal for ribs, stews and soups. My family likes to make seafood soup on Christmas Eve.
We invited friends to spend the weekend. We took them to see Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner’s house, which has been converted into a museum. It’s worth the detour if you’re ever on the east end of Long Island.
Here was my menu for Saturday night:
Now I’m back to work and heading to Austin. More on that in the next newsletter!
